Keeping Textbooks Relevant in the Age of Mobile Tech

CourseWeaver and OpenStax College announce partnership to provide textbook access to all CourseWeaver users

November 10, 2014

The publishing industry is facing tremendous challenges - a transitional shift must happen to not only make content more adaptive and integrated into the learning platform, but to address the growing affordability gap. Here at CourseWeaver we’re driving this industry change, which is why we’re excited to announce a partnership with OpenStax, a free textbook initiative based at Rice University, with an aim at making its content adaptive, integrated and affordable to all our users.

East Lansing, MI – CourseWeaver™, Inc. (CW) and OpenStax have formed a partnership to provide distribution of the OpenStax collection of textbooks to all users of the CourseWeaver Homework System and next-generation CourseWeaver platform. CourseWeaver’s reach totals nearly 3 million students across 19 countries. OpenStax is the fastest growing open educational resource publisher of peer-reviewed textbooks in the world.

The partnership exemplifies the vision of both companies in supporting and distributing high-quality, free and open content that reduces the burden on institutions and students alike. The OpenStax College Physics textbook is available and ready for immediate use, while the rest of the OpenStax offerings are being incorporated.

“We are thrilled to be partnering with CourseWeaver as they provide a powerful learning tool to OpenStax users. This further demonstrates a shift occurring in the market in which the proprietary monolithic models are being replaced with an efficient, distributed ecosystem that improves quality, lowers costs, provides more choice and enhances access for students,” said David Harris, editor in chief for OpenStax.

CourseWeaver’s next-generation learning platform combines the features of Learning/Course Management Systems (LMS/CMS) with adaptive assessment tools, powerful data analytics, OERs/MOOCs, publisher e-books, e-course packs and an integrated global content marketplace. CW’s vision is for the content to be completely integrated into its platform, pushing past the boundaries of simple e-book/e-coursepack initiatives.

The global marketplace allows independent authors, educators and instructors to author, publish and sell educational content alongside commercial publishers and open-source materials; empowering instructors to share, sell and use the best resources available globally. The system includes powerful tools that permit educators to easily create blended or flipped classrooms and completely personalized learning environments.

As Robert Fulk, CEO of CourseWeaver states, “The partnership furthers our mission of providing teachers the control and flexibility of educational content used in the classroom – empowering teachers to select from, mix, and use the best learning resources available globally. OpenStax’s mission of providing free, open-source textbooks dramatically disrupts the traditional model for educational materials as an alternative to high-cost commercial offerings.”
